Written before the Ma Gang’s painting exhibition
"Under the Red Flag"is the theme of Ma Gang's creation to grasp the pulse of the era, showing his deep concern for the"Generation" of his contemporaries, thus forming the language and temperament of his period of painting.
The theme and works on this exhibition are generated by Ma Gang and his friends in the process of conversation, and it is an attempt to express the theme of "people" in real life, with a very distinct intention. Specifically, Ma Gang adopts the way of sketching on the spot to express his most direct "feelings" to "people" without modification, presenting the outlook of life of "a generation" including himself. This way of sketching on the spot has a strong sense of immediacy and presence, which vividly conveys Ma Gang's observation, feeling and their state at this moment to everyone. The process of on-site painting is also a process of continuous communication and dialogue between artists and their subjects with brushes and colors. With his unique sensitivity, Ma Gang captures the traces left by the "The era" on those people of this generation, thus presenting the theme of "contemporaneity". This kind of self-consciousness to express the impression of the era through the specific "theme" figure image is closely related to Ma Gang's recent ten years diversion of historical painting creation, his thinking on the relationship between history, reality and theme, especially based on the traditional thematic art creation experience on the college. It constitutes a spiritual and philosophical language that resonates with individuals, societies and the era, thus arouse reflection.

“红旗下”,是马刚把握时代脉搏的创作主题,展现了他对于同处在时代大潮中的“一代人”的深刻关注,从而构成了一个阶段性绘画的语言与气质。
这个主题及展出作品是马刚和他的朋友们在交谈、聊天的过程中产生的,是一次围绕当下现实生活中的“人”的主题的表现尝试,立意很清晰。具体到创作中,马刚采取现场写生的方式,把他对“人”的最直接的“感受”不加修饰地表达出来,呈现了包括他自己在内的“一代人”的人生面貌。这种现场写生的方式,具有很强的直观性、在场感,生动地传达出马刚对每个人的观察、感受和他们此时此刻的状态。而现场作画的过程,也是艺术家用画笔和色彩与写生对象不断交流、对话的过程,马刚以艺术家特有的敏感抓住了“时代”在这代人的身上留下的痕迹,由此呈现出一种“当代性”的主题真实。这种通过特定“主题”下的人物形象表现时代印痕的自觉,与马刚近十年来的历史画创作转向,他对历史、现实与主题关系的思考,尤其是基于学院传统的主题性美术创作经验,密切相关。它构成一种精神且极富哲理的语言,与个人、社会和时代共鸣,引起思考。
